Vivek Ramaswamy, a 37-year-old Indian-American entrepreneur and author, has launched his campaign for the Republican Party’s nomination for president in the 2024 election.
Who is Vivek Ramaswamy?
Ramaswamy, who was born in Cincinnati to Indian immigrant parents, is a self-described anti-woke activist. He has criticized what he calls the “new secular religions” of COVID-ism, climate-ism, and gender ideology. He is also a critic of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) initiatives.
Ramaswamy graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and later earned a J.D. from Yale Law School. He worked as an investment partner at a hedge fund before founding a biotech company, Roivant Sciences, in 2014. He stepped down as CEO of Roivant in 2021, but remained its chairman until 2023. In 2022, Ramaswamy co-founded Strive Asset Management, an investment firm that positions itself in opposition to ESG initiatives.
In his campaign launch video, Ramaswamy said that the United States is in the middle of a national identity crisis. He blamed this crisis on “woke” ideology, which he said is “dividing Americans and weakening our country.”
Ramaswamy is a longshot candidate for the Republican nomination. However, his campaign has attracted attention from some conservative commentators, who see him as a potential alternative to the more establishment figures who are currently running for president.
