A 72-year-old judge from Southern California, Jeffery Ferguson, has been charged with the murder of his 65-year-old wife, Sheryl Ferguson. The incident occurred on August 3 at their Anaheim Hills residence after an argument at a nearby restaurant.

During a dinner outing, Jeffery Ferguson allegedly threatened his wife by mimicking a firearm gesture with his finger, which caused distress.

Upon returning home, Sheryl Ferguson reportedly challenged her husband to use a real gun on her. This led to Jeffery Ferguson retrieving a pistol from his ankle holster and shooting her.

Soon after the shooting, Jeffery Ferguson sent a text message to his court clerk and bailiff, admitting to the act and expressing remorse. He informed them that he would be in custody and unable to attend work.

Jeffery Ferguson’s adult son called 911 to report the shooting, resulting in the arrest of Ferguson by the Anaheim Police Department. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office revealed that a substantial number of firearms and ammunition were recovered from his residence.

Ferguson was charged with murder, personal use of a firearm, and discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury and death. He was released on a $1 million bond the following day after his arrest.

Attorneys Paul Meyer and John Barnett, representing Ferguson, labeled the incident a tragic accident rather than an intentional act. They expressed sympathy for the entire Ferguson family.

Jeffery Ferguson has a legal career spanning decades. He served as a prosecutor for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office starting in 1983 before becoming a judge in 2015 in the Orange County Superior Court.
