Chrystia Freeland is a Canadian politician who has served as the 29th Deputy Prime Minister of Canada since 2021. She is also the Minister of Finance, the first woman to hold this position.
Freeland is a member of the Liberal Party and has represented the riding of Toronto Centre in the House of Commons since 2015.
Freeland was born in 1968 in Peace River, Alberta, to a Ukrainian father and a British mother. She studied Slavic studies and economics at Harvard University, and then worked as a journalist for the Financial Times and The Economist. In 2000, she co-founded the online magazine The Walrus.
Freeland entered politics in 2013, when she was appointed to the Senate of Canada. She served as the Minister of International Trade from 2015 to 2017, and then as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2021.
Freeland is a fluent Ukrainian speaker and is known for her expertise on Russia and Ukraine. She is a strong advocate for democracy and human rights, and has been critical of the Russian government’s actions in Ukraine.
