The other 23 passengers on the bus sustained injuries, including broken bones, cuts, and bruises. The bus driver, Alfred E Collier also sustained minor injuries.
The occupants of the minivan, the driver and passenger, also sustained injuries but were not seriously hurt.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but authorities say it is possible that charges may be filed.
The Northwestern Local Schools District has canceled classes for Wednesday to allow students and staff to grieve.
“Our hearts go out to the families that have been impacted by this tragedy,” said a school spokesperson.
The crash is a reminder of the dangers of school bus travel. Parents should talk to their children about the importance of being safe on the bus, and drivers should be extra cautious when driving near school buses.
A witness at the scene, Skylar Bowen, described the harrowing aftermath of the crash.
“After it happened, I’d seen [the bus] on its side. They were putting kids on stretchers. They had, like, leg braces, neck braces and stuff like that. It’s not something that you would want to prepare yourself for,” Bowen said.
