Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is a well-known tech mogul and billionaire. However, his personal life has been the subject of public interest, especially regarding his relationships and divorces.
What Happened to Bezos’ First Wife?
In 2019, a scandal came to light that exposed Jeff Bezos’ infidelity, revealing that he had cheated on his wife MacKenzie Scott. The fallout from this revelation led to their divorce after nearly 25 years of marriage.
MacKenzie Scott, an accomplished novelist and the third-wealthiest woman in the US, had been by Bezos’ side during the growth of Amazon from its inception.
Following their divorce, Bezos faced further personal upheaval. In March 2021, he secretly married Lauren Sanchez, his former mistress with whom he had exchanged inappropriate text messages. This secretive union came as a surprise after the public scrutiny of his previous divorce.
In contrast, MacKenzie Scott’s post-divorce life took a different path. She married Dan Jewett, a chemistry teacher at a prestigious private school where her children from her previous marriage attended. The couple’s marriage lasted a year before they filed for divorce in September, and their property settlement details are yet to be finalized.
Despite their short-lived marriage, MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett do not have any children together. In contrast, her previous marriage to Bezos resulted in four children.
During her divorce from Bezos, MacKenzie Scott received a significant settlement in the form of Amazon stock. Bezos gifted her $38.3 billion worth of Amazon shares, which amounted to 4% of the company.
However, Bezos retained voting control over her shares and 75% of their Amazon equity, as per the terms of their divorce agreement.
