Sheila Y. Oliver, the first woman of color to serve in a statewide elected office in New Jersey history, died on August 1, 2023, after being hospitalized on July 31. She was 71.
Oliver was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, and served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2003 to 2017. In 2010, she became the first African-American woman to serve as Assembly Speaker. She was also the first woman of color to serve as Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey.
