Paul Reubens, the actor, and comedian best known for creating the Pee-wee Herman character, was reportedly married to Chandi Heffner in 1989. The ceremony was described as an “impromptu mock wedding” that took place at Shangri-la, the faux-Persian Diamond Head estate of the late heiress Doris Duke.
Heffner is the adopted daughter of Duke, whom Reubens met in Hawaii through comedian Jim Nabors. The couple exchanged vows in front of a small group of friends and family, and Reubens reportedly still has the temporary marriage license.
However, there is some doubt about whether the marriage was legally binding. According to a 1999 interview with Vanity Fair, Reubens said that he and Heffner had never gotten around to getting a “real” marriage license. He also said that the ceremony was “more of a joke than anything else.”
Despite the uncertainty about the legal status of the marriage, Reubens and Heffner remained together for several years. They eventually broke up in 1991, but they have remained friends.
